In Greece, the court sentenced the Ukrainian captain of cargo ship ”Christine" which sank in the Ionian Sea, to 5 years in prison, it sentenced five members of his team – also the citizens of Ukraine - to 4 years in prison.

Cargo ship "Christine" which was going from Albania to Bulgaria under the flag of Togo, sank on November 18 near the Greek island of Kefalonia. All six crew members - the Ukrainians managed to escape with the help of boats.

According to team members, the causes of shipwreck were engine failure and fracture in the casing of the vessel during the storm. Nevertheless, the court of Kefalonia found that the sailors flooded their ship themselves and caused damage to the environment as a result of “Christine”s fuel spills. The area of oil products on the surface of the Ionian Sea, came to 2,000 square meters, reports ForUm.

The representative of the Embassy of Ukraine in Athens doubts that the sailors would sink the ship at the risk of their life. He adds that he hopes for the success of the sailors’ appeal.
