During the first 10 months of 2009, 370,000 tons of meat was imported to Ukraine. Out of this amount are 190,000 tons of pork, about 20,000 tons of beef and about 150,000 tons of poultry meat. Thus up to 90 percent of beef imported to Ukraine are low-grade products, of pork and poultry meat - up to 40 percent, claimed chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association Union of Poultry Breeders of Ukraine Oleksandr Bakumenko.
After entry of Ukraine into the WTO, all customs barriers were removed, and Ukraine, according to Oleksandr Bakumenko, began to turn into the dump landfill on meat products for countries such as USA and Brazil.
However, Oleksandr Bakumenko complained about the inadequate attention from state authorities for inspection of imported meat products to Ukraine. According to him, if the state veterinary service checks every batch of meat products of Ukrainian producers, according to Ukrainian legislation, imported meat is checked randomly, up to 20 percent of all products.
The expert also reminded that the EU protects its domestic market from imported low-grade meat products through tariff and no tariff methods. In particular, tariff protection includes mixed rates of tariff duties, no-tariff protection - the quality system.
At the same time, Ukraine has banned imports of poultry, raw materials and products from Spain. The ban was imposed due to disease of poultry Newcastle disease in Spain, reported the State veterinary medicine committee, referring to information of the International Epizootic Bureau.
