Fish to Disappear in Azov Sea?
The greatest spawning ground of red-finned mullet in Ukraine that is located in the Molochnyi liman is on the verge of extinction. Sand muds artificial mouth and fish cannot go for spawning and go to the sea. The water becomes salted because of breach of water cycle. 70 percents of red-finned mullet of the Azov Sea are being born in the Molochnyi Liman. Ecologists are in despair: a number of fish has been decreasing during last five years. But quotes for catch have remained the same. During a few decades the mouth of liman had been cleaned by enterprise that was engaged into artificial breeding of fish. But in 90s years it collapsed. Nobody removes sand now. Entrepreneurs renewed cleaning only two years ago. But their efforts were fruitless. Gully is being filled up with sand each time after strong breeze and storm, Glavred reports. Since Ukraine had become independent, authorities did not assign any funds out of national budget for support of liman. The channel is to be widened and two breakwaters are to be built for renewal of hydrological mode. Maintenance of liman needs 1 million every year. Earlier enterprises that were fishing in the Azov |Sea paid contributions for the development of spawning grounds. Ecologists are sure that if they do it again, the problem will be solved. |
