The decline in the incidence of influenza in Ukraine is to be expected after the mass vaccination of the population, predicts the World Health Organization (WHO).
The head of WHO Office in Ukraine Ihor Pokanevych claims quarantine and vaccination are the main factors stopping the spread of influenza A/H1N1 (swine flu) on the territory of Ukraine, UNIAN news agency reports referring to Deutsche Welle.
Also, the head of the WHO Office in Ukraine noted that according to the organization, there will be three waves of influenza A/H1N1 in Ukraine as well as throughout the world: first – now, second - in spring, and the third - in the autumn of next year.
Ihor Pokanevych considers it is appropriate to continue the quarantine measures in the western regions of Ukraine and the imposition of quarantine, where the incidence rate may exceed the epidemic threshold soon, as well as the immediate immunization of the population from the swine influenza.
Answering the question when vaccination might begin in Ukraine, if no medication for prophylactic vaccination is registered in the country officially, and this is a long process, a spokesman for the World Health Organization said: "Today is an opportunity to use the vaccine in the event of an epidemic owing to rapid importation to the country”.
"We estimate now the situation; if the forecast is pessimistic and the data indicates a real threat, then we will do everything to make vaccine available for the public as soon as possible. But keep in mind that this vaccine is the world's major demand”, - added Ihor Pokanevych.
