President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko will not participate in the next summit of the European People's Party (EPP) in Brussels, although they were invited to it. One of the reasons for the refusal of Head of State was the fact that the President of the EPP Wilfried Martens supported the presidential ambitions of Yulia Tymoshenko, Kommersant-Ukraine newspaper reports.
"We understand that election campaign starts in Ukraine, and, obviously, our colleagues need to be there (in Ukraine - editor.)", - claimed a source at the secretariat of the party. However, EPP understands that being busy of President and Prime Minister employment is only a pretext for refusing to go to Brussels. A representative of the party, expressed his hope that in December, in the midst of an election campaign, both authorities will visit the solemn EPP Congress in Bonn.
Summits of EPP are being held before the meetings of the European Council - the supreme governing body of the European Union. Viktor Yushchenko and Yulia Tymoshenko are being invited to these summits as the leaders of parties associated with the EPP. Representatives of Ukrainian authorities traditionally use the Summit as a platform for negotiations with the leadership of the European states.
It is worthy of note that the decision to abandon a trip to Brussels were made by Viktor Yushchenko and Yulia Tymoshenko during the last week. One of the motives of the Head of State was the fact that the President of the EPP Wilfried Martens openly supported the presidential ambitions of Yulia Tymoshenko. As you know, at the Congress of The Yulia Tymoshenko Bloc (BYuT) on last Saturday First Vice Premier Olexander Turchynov read out from the stage on Maidan Nezalezhnosti the letter of Wilfried Martens addressed to Yulia Tymoshenko. "Your willingness to make difficult decisions, including struggle against corruption, is noted and appreciated in the world. Are you really ready to lead Ukraine as a President" – is said in the address of leader of EPP.
The reasons for refusal of Yulia Tymoshenko from a trip to Brussels are not known. A spokesman for Prime Minister Maryna Soroka said that the head of government will be busy at the meeting of Cabinet and assured that in December Yulia Tymoshenko will visit Bonn EPP Congress.
Experts believe Europe will understand refusal of the President and Prime Minister from the visit to Brussels. One can state that authorities of the state did not use the opportunity to improve relations with European countries and the European Union and to lobby the necessary decisions on the threshold of the summit EU-Ukraine in December.
